What is an ACL injury?

One of the most common problems involving the knee joint is an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The anterior cruciate ligament (also called the ACL) is one of four ligaments that are critical to the stability of the knee joint. A ligament is made of tough fibrous material and functions to control excessive motion by limiting joint mobility. Of the four major ligaments of the knee, the ACL injury is the most common knee ligament injury.

You have some decisions to make about how to best treat your torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). One treatment choice isn't right for everyone. Your decision will be based on:
· The specific nature of your ACL injury
· How your ACL injury is affecting your lifestyle
· How your ACL injury is affecting the types of activities you participate in

How do you evaluate an ACL injury?
If your child’s knee suddenly swells after an accident or injury, she may have a torn ACL or another serious knee problem.To help protect your child from more injuries that could hurt her growing bones and joints, it is important to get a thorough evaluation and proper treatment.
When you and your child come to our clinic, we will ask what happened before her knee began to swell and hurt. Next, we will examine your child’s knee. To doctors trained in sports medicine, knees with ACL tears often feel loose.

Symptoms
Symptoms of a severe and sudden (acute) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury include:
· Feeling or hearing a "pop" in the knee at the time of injury.
· Sudden instability in the knee (the knee feels wobbly, buckles or gives out) after a jump or change in direction or after a direct blow to the side of the knee.
· Pain on the outside and back of the knee.
· Knee swelling within the first few hours of the injury. This may be a sign of bleeding inside the joint (hemarthrosis). Swelling that occurs suddenly is usually a sign of a serious knee injury.
· Limited knee movement because of swelling and/or pain.

Causes
Most ACL injuries happen during sports and fitness activities. The ligament may tear when you slow down suddenly to change direction or pivot with your foot firmly planted, twisting or overextending your knee. Sports that involve running, turning sharply, pivoting and jumping — especially basketball, soccer and volleyball — put the knee at risk. The ACL can also tear when the tibia is pushed forward below the femur, such as during a fall in downhill skiing. A football tackle or accident also can cause an ACL injury.

Prevention:
Use proper techniques when playing sports or exercising. Several women's collegiate sports programs have reduced ACL tears through a training program that teaches athletes how to minimize the stress they place on their ACL.
Although the issue is controversial, the use of knee braces during aggressive athletic activity, such as football, has not been shown to decrease the incidence of knee injuries and may give the player a false sense of security.

Influenza - Should I offer Immunization to my Employees?

Every year around Christmas time, the flu seems to hit businesses and schools across the country. As a business owner, you may wonder if it is good strategy to offer immunization shots to your employees in order to avoid the flu this season. In this article, we have put together some things to think about, both for flu shots and against them, when trying to make your decision.

Is cost a factor? For many adults, flu shots are not covered by health Canada. This means that the business offering flu shots to their employees will have to foot the bill. It’s usually around $15 for each shot, so you will have to keep your budget in mind!

How many of your employees are actually at risk? There is a reason why Health Canada offers flu shot clinics free of charge to certain portions of the population; they are most at risk. This includes senior citizens, elementary age school children, their parents, and health care workers. Outside of these people, the population at large is not as at risk for catching influenza and your efforts may not actually be worth it. Of course there is always the chance of an entire office being infected by one worker who IS the parent of a small child.

How much will employee down time cost you? When determining the relative costs of flu shots for your employees, it’s important to factor in how much money you stand to lose due to employees taking sick time with the flu. If all hands on deck during this season is critical to your bottom line, then offering immunization is not a bad idea.

How effective are immunizations? Finally, make sure that you understand the possible side effects of influenza immunizations. Sometimes people will actually get sick due to the shots, and that can really defeat the whole purpose.

When it comes to a business, it can be hard to decide what kind of health benefits to provide for your employees. Certainly the down time incurred during flu season can be a hassle, but this has to be weighed against the merits of obtaining flu shots and the relative costs.

A home health care Oshawa provider can offer nursing, personal and home support, therapy and rehabilitation to address all of your health care needs.

This concept is known as consumer driven health care. If you do not currently have an HSA-qualified plan, you may want to consider obtaining one before you receive your medical treatment. If you qualify for coverage this may enable you to write off the entire cost of your trip. HSA instant quotes are available from HSA for America.

You can contribute to these accounts and may withdraw the funds at anytime for am eligible medical procedure. Many medical insurance plans do not allow for alternative health treatments or do not pay for getting treatments abroad. An HSA allows you to do this.

Many companies now offer HSA’s to their employees and the funds are deposited pre tax. The funds can even be invested in IRA’s and can offer an even greater tax break to those over 65. These funds can be withdrawn in a variety of ways. Some offer checks and Debit cards to be used for medical purposes. Make sure you find out if a particular service is considered medical treatment, although under current federal guidelines most services are.

This is great news for medical tourists. These are savvy people like yourself that want control of the medical treatments they receive and where they receive it. Using a HSA in conjunction with going abroad to places like India, Costa Rica, Mexico for medical treatment can save you thousands of dollars. Arthroscopic Surgery

Simon Moyes is an orthopadedic surgeon who offers surgical treatment for problems in either your knee, shoulder, foot and ankle.

Simon specialises in keyhole – or arthroscopic surgery. This is a highly sophisticated, minimally invasive technique which means you spend less time in hospital and you’re more likely to have a quick recovery. It is ideal for many orthopaedic procedures in joints, such as removing torn cartilage, ligament and tendon reconstruction and smoothing out bone defects.

The surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a tiny camera (an endoscope) into the joint. The image is shown on a video monitor, enabling the surgeon to make a thorough examination of the area. Once the diagnosis has been made, other small incisions are made to allow small surgical instruments to be inserted. The entire operation is carried out while looking at the monitor.

Because the joint does not have to be opened up fully, there is less risk of infection, healing can be quicker, scarring is minimal and there is less trauma to the connective tissue in the joint. It is especially useful to professional athletes who require a fast healing time.

The surgery takes place at the Wellington Hospital in London. Expert staff are dedicated to getting you back on your feet as soon as possible, using the latest physiotherapy techniques and top levels of aftercare.

Acne

Acne and similar skin problems are a common problem amongst people of all ages, but more especially young people and adolescents. Over 17 million people suffer from acne in the United States of America alone. There are various causes of acne as well as various ways to treat and prevent it.

Acne can cause mental and physical problems to sufferers whatever their age. Physical problems include scarring of the skin tissue due to the healing process and also the fact that spots, blackheads and pimples are painful for the sufferer. Mental issues that can arise from somebody suffering from acne include low self esteem and other confidence problems. Many acne sufferers are adolescents going the puberty and during puberty most young people have an increased sensitivity to personal appearance and acne. Therefore any outbreaks of acne, however large or small can lead to great embarrassment to the sufferer.

One of the main causes of acne, especially acne that occurs in adolescents going through puberty, is the fact that during this stage of life the body produces higher levels of the male hormone, testosterone. This causes an increase in the size of the sebaceous oil glands. This excess oil that is produced means that pores become blocked. Pores don’t just become blocked by the sebaceous oil itself though. The oil can also trap dirt particles and bacteria which also contribute to pores becoming blocked and acne appearing.

Another cause of acne is the shedding of dead skin cells. These cells are shed more quickly and increase in number and cause blockages in the hair follicles or pores. The combination of these blockages and the increases in sebaceous oil production provides the perfect environment for acne causing bacteria to grow and flourish.

As well as these two main causes of acne, there are other factors which contribute to this affliction. Women can experience an increase in the likelihood of acne during the first week of their menstrual cycle and can also experience acne problems during pregnancy. Both of these problems are due to changes in hormone levels in a woman’s body at the times outlined above. These imbalances and changes can again lead to an increase in the secretion of sebaceous oil as seen in puberty.

It has also been noted through research that sweating and excess perspiration can lead to an increase in acne problems in 15% of the population on average. Again this is due to an increase in the suitability of the skin condition for bacteria growth.

Another cause of acne in people of all ages is that of poor cleanliness and dirt. If dirt and small foreign particles get into the hair follicles and pores of the skin then blackheads and spots can appear and spread. This can also include unsuitable skin products and greasy hair products that come into contact with the skin and cause pore blockage.

Another contentious issue in the treatment and prevention of acne is the role that diet plays. Although traditionally scientists have denied that diet and the consumption of dairy products and greasy foods causes acne, recent research indicates that the modern, western diet can cause an increase in insulin levels and therefore testosterone levels which as stated previously increases acne.

Migraines With and Without Aura : Headaches

Migraines are very painful headaches where the pain tends to be on one side of the head. They can be disabling and may severely disrupt the sufferer's life. The two main forms are migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Both types usually involve pain in the front of the head, around the eye and temple regions.

Migraines With Aura

A migraine with aura is also known as a classic migraine and involves very specific warning signs. An aura involves neurological cues that are evident anywhere from ten to thirty minutes before the onset of a migraine attack. The aura is believed to be caused by the constriction of blood vessels in the brain. In a classic migraine, the pain is usually intense and can last for one to two days. A person may experience tingling in their head and face as well as intense throbbing head pain. An aura may also develop before head pain occurs or afterwards. Migraines with aura also tend to have some or all of the following symptoms:

* Blind spots
* Zig-zag or wavy lines
* Flashing dots
* Blinking lights
* Vision loss
* Distorted vision
* Blurred light around object edges
* Speech difficulties
* Alterations in shape and colour perception

Various other forms of migraines may have an aura but one that is not visual. A retinal migraine may entail complete temporary vision loss, and pain centred around one eye. A basilar artery migraine tends to cause the sufferer to feel dizzy, confused or nauseous. This type of migraine is generally more common in young women and has been linked to hormone changes throughout the month. Ophthalmologic migraines, like a retinal one, involve pain centred over one eye and the muscles around the eye may even become paralyzed. Although an ophthalmologic is not a common type of aura migraine, it can be a medical emergency.

A status migraine is a potentially very dangerous one where the pain lasts for more than 72 hours. The severity of the pain may mean the afflicted person requires hospitalization. This type of headache can be triggered by various chemical or environmental toxins or may occur as a result of medication withdrawal. An acephalgic migraine can also occur, and this does not include headache pain, but does include visual disturbances and other symptoms such as digestive discomfort. This type of migraine is commonly called a 'headache-free' migraine since it lacks the head pain that is characteristic of most migraines.

Migraines Without Aura

A migraine without aura is also known as a common migraine and it affects more migraine sufferers than a migraine with aura. This type of migraine does not have the same warning signs as a migraine with aura. In addition, it may start more slowly than a classic migraine with aura. Migraines without aura usually have less specific symptoms such as:

* Fatigue
* Generalized head pain
* Anxiety
* Mood changes
* Mental confusion
* Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Having a list of symptoms when you first visit your doctor may be helpful for him or her when determining which type of migraine you have. This will allow for a personalized preventative treatment plan based on your symptoms and the type of migraine you experience. You may also suffer from more than one type and your doctor will suggest ways to manage the pain with each one.

Discover Why Body Detoxification Is Good For Yor Mind

We desperately need to pay close attention to simple body detoxification as the Earth's atmosphere becomes steadily more polluted. Despite the best efforts of individuals and groups and even some governments, the pollution is not going to get any better anytime soon. We need to be more cautious and also more aware of the inherent dangers brought on by, well, just living.
Let's start off by getting to grips with how the toxicants surrounding us affect the body. We function by using the mind and our 5 senses. We have to concern ourselves with the cause and effect on our body, mind and senses.

Non Physical Toxicity?

Non physical toxicity can definitely have a severe effect on the mind. Generally we tend to consider "toxic" substances as being purely physical. For example heroin and the like. Consider that nowadays in our high paced life we are inundated with all manner of mental toxicants such as excessive greed, the covetousness for material things, the unnatural desire to be like a film or rock star. When the mind realizes we can't have, or be, these things extreme mental anguish can manifest itself in many ways. This can even lead to breaking the law, ending up in prison or even the loss of ones own life. Extreme it certainly is.

Our Bodies Are Easy To Please

Next in line of risk are our internal organs. The food that we eat determines the health of our body and proper functioning of the internal organs. It is a common fact that medical practitioners and scientists classify most of the present food items as junk food. The body had been designed to accept food that is naturally grown. Anything beyond that makes the body and the internal organs do more work, creating a strain that adversely impacts their performance.

Choose To Become Addicted?

As if these toxins and pollutants are not enough to harm our body, we also voluntarily get addicted to quite a few other items that affect our body adversely. The most common among them are tobacco and alcohol. The next higher levels are drugs like cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methadone, etc., which are fatal, once the addiction sets in.

Good Food?

It is becoming more and more apparent that food is not grown or reared anymore. In fact most would be difficult to class as food rather mass produced filler with chemicals and fertilizers. Throw in some artificial coloring together with a hint of artificial flavoring and we have a diet that makes our internal organs work hard enough to collapse. What can we expect if we run the most complex piece of machinery on the planet, which only wants a touch of fiber and a few minerals and vitamins available naturally, on starch, filler, salt and fat? Good health comes with good food.More information on detoxing your body and also detox colon programs can be found over at Fact-Find.com.

Hypnotherapy To Stop Smoking

In this article I am going to share with you some of the specific ways Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire can help you to stop smoking, for good. With the smoking ban fast approaching in the UK (July 1st 2007), many people are beginning to feel the social pressures to stop smoking. The benefits of stopping smoking are immeasurable. Without question you will be much healthier and perhaps more importantly free from the control you should have felt by being at the mercy of a horrible, smelly and expensive habit. Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire is a hypnotherapy practice based in Aldbury, near Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. At Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire, you are supported to give up smoking with ease and also quickly. What this means is there won’t be months of relying on expensive nicotine patches and other replacement therapies, which in my opinion, just keep the physical addiction going, longer then necessary.

When you make the decision to seek support from Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire to help you stop smoking, we take steps to ensure that you are given the best possible chance of quitting. One of the ways in which Hypnotherapy, Hertfordshire, does this is by assessing your motivation to stop. From experience, it is clear to us that you must want to stop smoking now and you must also want to do this for yourself. The therapist will help you identify whether this is the case. Clients who are not considered motivated enough will be advised to come back, when the time is right. That way you are not wasting money and we are not wasting out time!

At Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire, we use various different hypnotherapy techniques to assist our clients so that they are able to stop smoking. The techniques used depend on the unique needs of the client. Some of the techniques include:

Identifying and consolidating your reasons to stop smoking- At Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire, we have many facts and information about the negative effects of smoking on the mind and body. The hypnotherapist spends time with you, supporting you in applying this information to yourself and your life. The result is that perhaps for the first time, you can appreciate that harm from smoking, is not something that happens to other people. At this stage in the session you will begin to will feel the strong desire to move away from smoking forever.

Identifying the benefits and positive rewards of stopping smoking – its not all doom and gloom! It is also very important to begin focusing on what you will gain by stopping smoking and how your life will improve massively for the better. The therapist will also spend time with you, discussing and exploring the positive impact quitting smoking and remaining a non-smoker will have on your life. You will also be guided to set goals for the future. These will focus on things you wouldn’t have been able to do as a non-smoker. You will be amazed at the new options you have for relaxing, becoming more healthy, going to new places and of course spending all that extra money you will save by stopping smoking.

Hypnosis with positive suggestion. Of course, part of your stopping smoking treatment at Hypnotherapy Herts will involve you getting to sit back and relax whilst your unconscious mind does the learning! During this process you will be guided to a deep state of relaxation, whilst the therapist also directs your unconscious mind with suggestions and metaphors to stop smoking. You will also be supported to develop positive coping strategies. Acknowledge that your smoking habit has served a purpose in the past, in that it has likely been a method for coping. Hypnotherapy and NLP techniques (neuro linguistic programming) will enable you to develop positive coping strategies that serve you in the present and future. One of the new positive coping strategies could be learning to use an anchor. If the therapist feels that you would benefit from having an anchor created, this will also be part of the stop smoking treatment session at Hypnotherapy, Hertfordshire. An anchor, is basically a positive resource of emotions that you can fire off, when you need extra emotional strength to cope.

There are also several formal change techniques, which are effective for helping you to stop smoking. The most appropriate technique will depend on your unique problem. At Hypnotherapy, Hertfordshire, these techniques are used if required. Examples include: The Swish Technique which can be used if you wish to replace a highly contextualised problem behaviour with a more positive behaviour. It works to eliminate behaviours that occur in specific situations after specific triggers. 2) Parts Integration is very useful at uncovering the positive intention of your smoking habit and dealing with incongruent behaviour and feelings. 3) Like To Dislike – This technique is based on information about how we code memories in our brain. We tend to code things we like in a different way to things we don’t like. So, its possible to recode your memory of smoking into something that you find disgusting.

Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire provides a free consultation to those who make the decision to use Hypnotherapy Hertfordshire to stop smoking. In addition, free support for the next six months is provided. This means that at any time within six months you should you start smoking again, we will work for free to get you to quit smoking again. Hypnotherapy, Hertfordshire works on the basis that it is possible to have you stop smoking in one session. This is because we deal with all that aspects of your habit in this session, so that you leave a non-smoker and are done with that old habit.

A Basic Cleanse To Enhance Your Health & Metabolism!:

You cannot expect to improve your metabolism, lose weight permanently, or drastically increase your metabolism without first cleaning out all of the built up “sludge” that may have accumulated inside your eliminatory system/colon.

Skipping this step will make the weight loss/fat loss process far harder, and it will create a destiny for you of achieving only temporary results.

There are 3 initial steps to take for your cleanse to be most effective:

1st…Decide how long you want your cleanse to last. I usually recommend to my personal clients that their cleanse last no less than 1 full day and no longer than 7-10 days. For example, if they have lived a life of eating fast food and little or no physical activity, then their cleanse should last closer to the 7-10 day mark. But if they have lived a healthy! life, eating lots of fresh raw vegetables, exercising regularly, and possibly even doing another type of cleanse every now and then…then you need only follow this cleanse 1 or 2 days in a row (but most of my clients – even those who come to me in excellent condition, usually choose to stay on the cleanse longer than just 1 – 2 days…the average is 3 – 5 days initially, then once a month thereafter they can do a mini cleanse lasting 1 – 2 days).

2nd…Decide what you’re going to consume on the cleanse (this is a great time to get all the junk food cleaned out of your kitchen – give it away, throw it away, just get rid of it – but don’t get rid of it by eating it yourself!!!). After you’ve cleaned out your kitchen, you should stock it with healthy foods, and the only healthy foods you’ll be consuming on your cleanse are plain, fresh, clean water (preferably ‘distilled’ or ‘purified’ water), vegetable juices, and possibly some decaffeinated herbal tea (if you desire it).
The term “vegetable juice”, when used here, refers ONLY to juices that you juice yourself. So get yourself a vegetable juicer and a wide variety of fresh, raw, preferably organic vegetables. Then 2 or 3 times per day juice enough vegetables to fill a glass and drink it down (some people, including diabetics, find it beneficial to water down their juice with 50% water – this simply dilutes the sugar found in some vegetables).

You should add a small pinch of cayenne pepper to a few of your drinks throughout the day – this strengthens your blood, increases circulation, improves the assimilation of nutrients from the vegetable juices into your body, and helps your bowels eliminate the built up waste from your system (which gets rid of any constipation).

3rd…Do some light cardiovascular exercise like walking or bike riding for 20 – 30 minutes each day of your cleanse. Avoid any heavy physical exertion if possible – your goal is to relax and let your system rebuild an! d repair itself during your cleanse. Finally, rent a funny movie and laugh (a lot). When you have a good laugh, your body secretes chemicals that aid in digestion and promote good metabolic health.
Review this or any other dietary or lifestyle changes with your physician first.
A far more thorough version of the cleanse is explained in detail in Maximize Your Metabolism, or you can have a cleanse and a diet designed just for you in one of Christopher's e-classes or in his mentor program - information on all of these products and services can be found at www.MaximizeYourMetabolism.com.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease

Author: groshan fabiola

Parkinson’s disease is easily noticeable because of its physical manifestations. A problem that develops mostly in elderly people, Parkinson’s is very important to acknowledge so that it can be taken care of at its early stages. Knowing what it is and what the symptoms are will help you to catch it in the beginning and start treatment immediately.

Parkinson's disease results when brain cells deteriorate. It is a chronic condition because it has no cure and does not go away by itself. It is also a degenerative disease, which means that it breaks down the body of the person it attacks. Muscle control is lost due to a lack of dopamine in the brain and, therefore, a difficulty in walking, coordination, and severe shaking develop.A person with Parkinson’s disease may also notice a change in his or her voice.

A person’s voice may become low and monotone, with little or no inflection. Akinesia and bradykinesia may also manifest as trouble executing certain movements, and increased slowness when movements are attempted. Talking more quietly is another affect of the disease, as is difficulty with motor skills. The result is lessened in fine motor skills dexterity and may mean the person with Parkinson’s may require help with everyday tasks such as shaving, tying laces, fastening buttons, and handwriting. Oily skin and dandruff is an affect of seborrheic dermatitis.

Therefore, Parkinson’s patients may notice that they have developed greasier skin, especially around the nose and eyebrows, and a greasier scalp. This symptom is often accompanied by increased sweating. Non-specific sensory symptoms include unusual sensory feelings such as numbness, pain, burning sensation, restlessness and fatigue. Lastly, depression and senility, as well as dementia, are also symptoms of Parkinson's.Some of the signs of Parkinson's to look out for include tremors and trembling. For nearly three quarters of patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the appearance of tremors or trembling is the first noticeable symptom.

Muscle stiffness is another symptom of the disease. Patients experiencing stiffness or rigidity may not notice any other symptoms of this characteristic. In fact, the person may not even notice the signs of rigidity unless a physician notes it during a physical examination. The presence of physical rigidity, such as decreased arm swing, is especially useful in helping medical personnel establish a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. This may also include 'Freezing' which is the sudden inability to move when you want to. If a foot on one side starts to drag, and you have difficulty walking through doorways and hallways, you should go to a doctor. Lacking coordination and having difficulty maintaining balance, controlling facial muscles, are causes of akinesia and bradykinesia.

These characteristics may manifest themselves in the face, for example, as reduced facial expression, infrequent blinking, and slow swallowing resulting in increased saliva secretion, and occasionally, drooling.Feeling anxious, angry, discouraged or depressed is common as the brain is undergoing a number of chemical changes. Approximately forty to seventy percent of Parkinson’s sufferers experiences depression at times, while twenty percent of these are a major depressive disorder. Parkinson’s disease is not something to be taken lightly, as it is very serious and can cause permanent problems.If you want to find greater resources regarding facial concepts or facial concept or even facial flex please click these links.

Understanding an Ear Infection

Ear Infection

An ear infection is an infestation in the ear, caused by either bacteria or by virus. The adult ear infection and the inner ear infection are other names by which it is called. The scientific name is otitis media.

Ear Infection Causes

An ear infection may be caused by one or a combination of the following factors. Within the ear are tiny bones which help translate sound waves to the brain. The sound waves travel to these bones through the Eustachian tube, which in children is placed in more of a level position. When liquid is introduced to the ear through swimming or bathing, and if the liquid is not cleaned out by a swab, it may linger there and allow bacteria to fester. Though the Eustachian tube is more slanted in adults, similar infestation may occur if water is not cleared.

Even without water, ear wax may build up, also leaving the ear open to bacterial infestation. Ear wax build up should be cleared regularly, especially because viruses may speed up the possibility of infection.

Ear Infection Symptom

There are many ear infection symptom to be aware of. Feeling pressure in the ear, or even an earache, is indicative of the general build up of fluid or pus in the infected area. The infection may cause dizziness, nausea, or a feeling of fatigue.

Headaches, ringing, hearing loss, and ear drainage may also develop. Often, as symptoms grow more severe, blurry vision, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. These symptoms are more prevalent in children, who suffer an ear infection four times as often as adults do.

Ear Infection Prevention

Prevention is the best way to avoid an ear infection. Because the Eustachian tubes are connected to the sinuses, many nasal sprays have appeared on the market to help flush out the build up and bacteria in the Eustachian tubes as well as the nasal passages and the sinuses.

Many of the nasal sprays and other medicines available include xylitol, which is a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables and used in our everyday metabolism. Xylitol is looks and tastes like sugar, though it contains fewer calories and zero net carbs. Xylitol is a natural bacteria repellant used to prevent more than just ear infection. Xylitol Glossary of Prevention and Benefits explains more of the benefits associated with the use of xylitol.

In understanding ear infection and its symptoms, prevention becomes the natural step. Xylitol as a leading ingredient is proven to reduce ear infection risk.

The Truth About Acne Treatments

The Truth About Acne Treatments

Author: Brian Dolezal

Acne is one of the most common skin problems affecting people around the world. At some point in their life, nearly everyone will battle problematic pimples that leave them feeling embarrassed, socially unacceptable or even depressed about their appearance. Acne, however, is only on the surface and a healthier skin is just waiting to be discovered underneath.

Acne treatments are one of the most effective ways to treat breakouts. When combined with a few natural home remedies, your skin can be on its way to a healthier and happier appearance. Cleansing your face at least twice each day, including both morning and night, will help to remove any buildup from your skin. Many acne sufferers may not realize this, but certain soaps may actually irritate the skin and add even more redness. Some commercial soaps have harsh ingredients that are thought to strip the skin of its natural moisture and, in some cases, may even cause mild to moderate itching. A moisturizing soap is a popular alternative and some even enjoy handmade soap products for the ultimate in skin care.

When most people begin to notice regular acne breakouts, they tend to stop by the local retail store in search of an affordable and effective treatment. While over-the-counter acne products can be just as effective as expensive prescription-only acne treatments, your search will be more successful if you focus on your individual problem and less on a product that guarantees immediate results. The truth is that your acne problem did not appear overnight and any product that promises to cure it as quickly is probably more than a little ambitious. Some popular over-the-counter acne treatments, such as Clearpores, DermaCleanse, and ProActiv offer 3-step programs with realistic expectations and do not require a doctor's prescription. Results in any form take time to appear and all acne products should be purchased with that in mind.

If and when acne fails to respond to conventional over-the-counter acne treatments, medical intervention may be needed. This is especially true with severe cases, which sometimes cannot be treated without prescription medication. Accutane is one of the possible acne treatments available to sufferers who have exhausted all other efforts to treat their breakouts. Although it has the potential for dangerous side effects, over two million users have tried Accutane and many have seen results where other acne products had otherwise failed. Because Accutane is available by prescription only, a physician can best explain both the benefits and risks associated with this 4-6 month aggressive treatment.

Whether you have an occasional acne breakout or are suffering with a constant discomfort, never disrupt the problem area by scratching, squeezing or aggravating your acne. Each of these actions may lead to infection or, at the very least, can worsen the redness and discomfort associated with acne. Caring for your skin properly and knowing when to seek medical help will result in healthier skin and a confident smile.

Antibiotics 101- What You Absolutely Need to Know

Antibiotics 101- What You Absolutely Need to Know

Author: Mansi gupta

Introduction
Antibiotics are said to be the greatest contribution of modern day science helping the doctors to think beyond microorganinsms.their importance is felt much more in developing countries where the infections are prevalent. There is a mushrooming of antibiotics since last few decades because of both the need and the demand of aseptic conditions both in and out of the hospital.

What are antibiotics?
Antibiotics are chemical or biological substances either produced by microorganisms or are produced artificially to kill or inhibit the growth of other microorganisms. They are used at very low concentrations.

What are different types?
As there are innumerable antibiotics that are presently in use, different people classify them differently for e.g. those that kill or those just inhibit the action of the microorganisms, according to their chemical nature, according to the types of organisms they kill, according to the no of different types of microorganisms, their mechanism of action and so hence and so forth.
Hence sulfadiazine and others are sulfonamides while isoniazid is nicotinic acid derivatives, etc. tetracyclines are bacteriostatic while vancomycin is bactericidal.

How do they work?
Some antibiotics for e.g. penicillins inhibit the cell wall synthesis of the bacteria, some like acyclovir inhibit the DNA synthesis, some like sulfonamides interfere with the metabolism and still others like tetracyclines inhibit protein synthesis. Similarly there are many others with different mechanism of action meant to be targeted at specific function of the bacteria or virus.

Is there any need for them?
After their discovery and then introduction into the world of medicine , initially they were used judicially but nowadays as more and more antibiotics are being developed and there has been a pressure over the physicians for an aseptic environment , these type of drugs seem to be overused. This has caused many fold problems. One problem is of toxicity that means that if the dose is much larger than expected then it may lead to accumulation in the body and may even lead to death in some cases. Second problem is of hypersensitivity, which means that certain antibiotics for e.g. penicillins can cause hypersensitive reactions in the body, which at times may be quite severe. But the most important problem and the problem, which has attracted much concern among the medical fraternity, is that of resistance. Certain microorganisms for e.g. Staphylococcus are known to get quick resistance against the antibiotics and you need to be cautious before using them blindly.

What do we mean by resistance?
By resistance we mean that a microorganism is either not responding or responding minimally to an antibiotic to which that microorganism used to respond earlier. There are numerous mechanisms by which they develop resistance and this may be making themselves impermeable to the drugs or making them inactive or mutating themselves, etc.

What is the latest research going on?
At present the latest research that is going on is to how to reduce the use of antibiotics by using them judicially so that the microbes might not fall to the prey of resistance and then be of no use to us.

Mansi gupta writes about Antibiotics topics.

Worrying About Alzheimer's Disease

Worrying About Alzheimer's Disease

Author: Royane Real

As people enter their middle years, they start to notice more and more frequent lapses of memory, particularly their short-term memory.

They may enter a room to do something, and forget what it is. They may be unable to recall the name of someone who used to live next door. And they may start to worry that their forgetfulness is not just a harmless incident, but the first indication of something far more sinister?the onset of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's is the name given to a very serious brain disease in which brain cells are killed by microscopic plaques and tangled fibers. The parts of the brain crucial for laying down and accessing recent memories are usually destroyed first. Brain cell destruction spreads to other parts of the brain, causing progressive loss of function. Death eventually follows.

At present there is no known cure for Alzheimer's disease. Scientists are racing to learn the cause, or causes of Alzheimer's, and to find a way to stop the destruction of the brain once it starts.

There is some evidence that people who have a diet high in antioxidants have lower rates of getting Alzheimer's. Fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly those that have strong, bright colors tend to be high in protective antioxidants.

People who consume greater levels of cold water fish such as salmon, tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer's. There are also vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements that seem to have a protective effect on the brain. Higher intakes of Folic acid are associated with a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease.

Keep Your Brain Happy and Healthy

Keep Your Brain Happy and Healthy

Author: Royane Real

Alzheimer's disease is not the only cause of brain power destruction in elderly persons. There are many other causes that can lead to a diminishment of mental capacity or to outright dementia in later years.

Fortunately, you can work with your doctor to help reduce your risks.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor in developing dementia. Not only does high blood pressure damage brain cells directly, but it also increases the risk of stroke. Have your blood pressure checked regularly, and if it is too high, work with your doctor to bring it down to a safe level.

Diabetics are at particularly high risk for developing dementia. If you are diabetic, it is very important to get your blood sugar levels under control.

If you want to protect your brain for the long term, avoid excess alcohol consumption. Long term consumption of more than two alcoholic drinks a day can directly damage brain cells, as well as deplete the body of nutrients it requires to function optimally.

Other factors suspected of contributing to the risk of dementia include exposure to pesticides, solvents, heavy metal poisoning, as well as brain injury due to trauma.

Avoid your exposure to these brain destroyers as much as you possibly can, even if it means changing jobs. Hundreds of thousands of brain injuries occur every year as a result of automobile accidents. Many of these traumas could be avoided or reduced by slowing down while driving, and by wearing a seat belt.

Chronic stress is very damaging to brain cells. The chemical changes produced in your body when you are under chronic stress damage every system, including your brain. If your life is currently very stressful, find ways to change your life circumstances where possible, and learn to change the way you react to these situations.

To reduce the impact of stress, practice techniques of mind and body relaxation such as daily meditation and prayer. Burn off some of the negative effects of stress on your body by committing to regular exercise. Develop a circle of trusted friends and be sure to include some fun in your life.
